Indore organises its social life around food, and it does so later at night than almost anywhere else in central India. Sarafa Bazaar turns into a street-food market after the jewellers close, and Chhappan Dukan runs from the evening well past most cities' bedtime — between them they account for an enormous share of the city's first dates, because they are public, cheap, easy to leave and impossible to be bored in. The newer commercial life sits around Vijay Nagar and AB Road, with Palasia in the middle; the colleges and the management and technology institutes keep the age mix young. The city is famously well kept, which matters more than it sounds: people actually use the public spaces. Distances are short and traffic is tolerable, so a plan across town is not the negotiation it would be elsewhere.

Is street food really the standard first date in Indore?

It is one of the two standards, and it is not a lazy choice here. Sarafa Bazaar after the shops close and Chhappan Dukan in the evening are genuine city institutions, they are busy and public, and walking and eating gives two people something to do with their hands while they work out whether they like each other.

How late does Indore stay out?

Later than most cities its size. Sarafa in particular gets going well after dinner time and runs deep into the night, which makes an after-work meeting at nine perfectly reasonable rather than an odd suggestion. Vijay Nagar and the AB Road restaurants keep their own, slightly earlier hours.
