Is a beach walk really the standard first date in Chennai?

It genuinely is one of them. Elliot's Beach at Besant Nagar and the stretch at Marina are where the city goes to cool off in the evening, they are public, easy to leave and cost nothing, which is most of what a good first meeting needs. Cafés in Nungambakkam and Alwarpet are the other half of the answer.

Does living on OMR make dating harder?

It makes it later. The IT corridor is a long way from the older parts of town at peak hour, so people who work there often keep plans close to home on weekdays and come into the city at weekends. It is worth saying which end of OMR you are on — the difference between Perungudi and Siruseri is a real one.
