Patna is a long city strung along the south bank of the Ganga, and it is dominated by two things: the river and the students. The coaching and university population is enormous and it sets the tone in whole neighbourhoods — the area around Boring Road and Rajendra Nagar in particular is full of people in their late teens and twenties who came here to study. Boring Road is the usual first-meeting answer, with the cafés and restaurants that have opened around it; Gandhi Maidan is the central landmark and the open-air alternative; and the Ganga ghats, especially around Gandhi Setu and the riverfront, are the evening walk. The city is flat, compact along its main axis and easy enough to cross. Bihar has prohibition, so evenings are built on food and coffee, and the city's café culture has grown quickly because of it.
