Kolkata is a city where sitting and talking for three hours is the activity, not the prelude to one. Adda is a real habit and it shows up in how people date here: the long conversation over coffee is the point, and rushing it reads badly. The north–south Metro does most of the heavy lifting, so Park Street, Esplanade and the stretch down to Rabindra Sarobar are all easy to name and easy to reach. Park Street and Camac Street take the evening meetings, the Coffee House near College Street takes the student version, and Princep Ghat or the lake at Southern Avenue take the walking ones. Durga Puja reshapes October entirely — for that week the whole city is outdoors at night and nobody is making other plans. Rents and distances are gentler than in Delhi or Mumbai, so cross-city is a normal thing to agree to.

Adda — settling in somewhere and talking well past the point where the coffee is finished — is a genuine local habit, and a first meeting that runs three hours is not a sign that either of you has lost track of time. Everything moves outside and onto the street. Pandal-hopping at night with friends is what most of the city is doing that week, which makes it a wonderful time to meet somebody and a terrible time to book a quiet table. Plan for crowds, plan to walk a lot, and expect plans to change on the night.
